Hölderlin’s novel Hyperion (1797-9) is one of the supreme achievements of the Romantic period in Germany, and, in its combination of linearity and circularity, arguably the most successful exemplification of what Friedrich Schlegel called ‘progressive Universalpoesie.’ Hyperion is an epistolatory novel of education in which a Greek philosopher of the late 18th century writes letters to a German friend telling his life's story.. Hyperion pursues learning, friendship, love, patriotism and martial valour, and admiration of nature, as … Hyperion's Song of Destiny. Holy spirits, you walk up there in the light, on soft earth. Shining god-like breezes touch upon you gently, as a woman’s fingers play music on holy strings.

Москва, «Наука», 1988, Серия «Литературные памятники». Friedrich Hölderlin’s only novel, Hyperion (1797–99), is a fictional epistolary autobiography that juxtaposes narration with critical reflection. Returning to Greece after German exile, following his part in the abortive uprising against the occupying Turks (1770), and his failure as both a lover and a revolutionary, Hyperion assumes a hermitic existence, during which he writes his letters.

Hyperion also bears stylistically the marks of the hopelessly problematical character of this genre. The attempt to depict the citizen in epic was bound to fail. But from this failure emerged a unique style which is both lyrical and epic: the objective style of a profound indictment of the abjectness of the bourgeois world after the light of its heroic “illusions” is extinguished.

Holderlin transforms the sociability embodied by the epistolary form into a vision of fully delineated subjectivities in dialogue. What is most interesting is the novel's weird erotic push-and-pull, as Hyperion yo-yos between Alabanda and Diotima. ― Friedrich Holderlin, Selected Poems and Fragments.
